Why Is Mental Health Important?

1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Unfortunately, stigma often prevents individuals from seeking appropriate mental health treatment. Pursuing a college degree often comes with various challenges. Additionally, college aged students may experience a variety of personal life stressors when beginning the transition into college life, which makes them especially vulnerable to experiencing issues related to mental health.

Poor mental health may negatively impact various aspects of life, such as work, academic performance, physical health and social relationships.

Regular exercise, quality sleep, proper nutrition and social connection are all factors linked to quality mental health. A healthy balance of all these things may positively effect your overall mood, cognitive performance and quality of life.

Signs of Stress:

  • Forgetfulness, lack of focus
  • Excessive worry
  • Extreme weight loss or gain, loss of appetite
  • Changes in personality or mood swings
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Personal hygiene changes
  • Fatigue
  • Sudden physical health changes

Symptoms or signs of mental health issues are serious if  they start to impact your daily life. For example, they occur frequently or effect your ability to carry out normal activities, like school or work.
